This has to rank pretty high on the list of silly and yet awesome names for a drink. Alas, the beverage does not do its moniker justice. This is one of those instances where the recipe doesn’t make the drink sound good, and it actually turns out not to be good. It’s not a total loss, however.
1/2 white rum
1/2 Italian (sweet) vermouth
The peel of a lime
Shake with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Peel lime carefully over the drink, avoiding the pith, and drop the peel in.
Not only does the lime peel, when cut in a continuous spiral, give this drink a nice appearance, but it helps its flavor immensely. I had a little sip before I put the lime in, and it tasted very medicinal – like the kind of medicinal flavor you’d threaten a kid with. Not good at all. But the lime oils perk the drink up a lot, cutting down on the bitterness. And, as always, lime plays very well with rum. This would actually be a pretty good beverage with lime juice in it, I think, but then it would be something else, wouldn’t it? As it is, this barely slips into three liver territory. If you’ve got nothing else in the house but rum, vermouth, and a lime, go for it. Better yet, go to the liquor store.
