The XYZ Cocktail

The XYZ is another drink that Patrick Gavin Duffy ripped off wholesale from the Savoy Cocktail Book for his Official Mixer’s Manual that came out four years later. I guess all was fair in cocktail publishing back then. Anyhoo, this is a sort of a daiquiri, I guess, with lemon juice and orange liqueur…or maybe it’s a sort of margarita with rum…or maybe a sort of a daisy but without any soda? Whatever.

The Recipe

1/4 lemon juice

1/4 Cointreau

1/2 white rum

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

XYZ Cocktail

Looks like a daiquiri, anyway. It tastes, and this is, I think, as accurate a description as possible, like a very alcoholic lemonade crossed with an orange creamsicle. And I have nothing more to say about it. At the very high end of four livers.

  1. I think you vastly underestimate this simple cocktail. Equal parts works best, with plenty of ice. This cocktail is a cornerstone to a lot of variations, both in liqueur and in base. Sidecar, white lady, margarita just to name a few siblings. Dark or spiced rums work wonders too.
